APE Grupo is organising and promoting the first edition of the Architecture Awards for architecture and interior design, which, with a prize of 5,000 euros for the winning project, aim to recognise and highlight the work done by professionals in architecture, interior design, and design in using APE Grupo ceramics in their projects.

Vitápolis is a residential complex for seniors in Toledo (Spain). It offers tailor-made socio-assistance services, featuring 35 fully accessible independent apartments and over 1,500 square meters of shared spaces, including a gym, workshop area, cafeteria, meeting and lounge rooms, gardens, pool, sports areas, and urban orchards. This project aims to address the evolving socio-assistance and emotional needs of this population sector.

Benedetta Tagliabue
EMBT Architects

An internationally renowned architect, together with Enric Miralles (1955-2000) she founded the international studio EMBT Architects, which has offices in Barcelona, Shanghai and Paris.

Her notable works include the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh, Santa Caterina Market, the head office of Gas Natural Fenosa and Diagonal Mar Park in Barcelona, the Spanish Pavilion at the Expo 2010 Shanghai (winner of the RIBA Best International Building Award 2011), the Kálida Sant Pau Centre, and San Giacomo Apóstolo Church and Parish Complex in Ferrara, which won the Dedalo Minosse International Prize 2022.

She balances her professional career with teaching in international universities and schools. She’s a visiting professor at Harvard University, Columbia University and the ETSAB in Barcelona, and she regularly gives conferences at prestigious architectural forums and universities. In 2004, she received an Honorary Doctor of Arts degree from the School of Arts and Social Sciences at Napier University in Edinburgh (Scotland).

Her works have won more than 100 awards and international mentions for excellence in design, including the National Award for Catalonia in 2002, the RIBA Stirling Prize in 2005, the National Award for Spain in 2006, the City of Barcelona Award in 2005 and 2009, the FAD Awards in 2000, 2003, 2007 and 2020, the WAF Awards in 2010 and 2011, a nomination for the EU Mies Award in 2022, the Piranesi Prix de Rome Prize in 2021, the Dedalo Minosse Prize in 2022, the Plan Awards 2022, and the Chicago Athenaeum Award in 2012 and 2022.

She won the RIBA Jencks Award in 2013 and was awarded the Creu de Sant Jordi (St. George’s Cross) by the Generalitat de Catalunya in 2019. In 2021, at the Smart City Expo World Congress in Barcelona, she received the Leadership Award 2021 for her contribution to globally publicising sustainable and humane city models. In the same year, in Rome, she took home an award for her professional career in the shape of the Piranesi Prix de Rome 2020.

In June 2022, Benedetta was named a new member of the Pontificia Accademia di Belle Arti e Lettere dei Virtuosi al Pantheon (Rome) by Pope Francis and was awarded the Prix Le Soufaché 2022 medal for architecture by l’Académie d’Architecture (Paris).

Benedetta is involved as a jury member in the world’s leading awards, including the Pritzker Architecture Prize (since 2014), the Princess of Asturias Award for the Arts (2011-2022), the Loewe Craft Prize, the RIBA Jencks Award and the RIBA Stirling Prize.

Estudio Caramba

Tomás Alía is an acclaimed interior designer in Spain and internationally, as well as founder of Estudio Caramba, based in Madrid. This studio covers architecture, industrial design and graphic imaging. Its philosophy and success is based on great teamwork developed in a modern, functional environment.

Tomás Alía’s work has seen him win the Gold Medal of Merit in the Fine Arts 2022, an award granted by the Spanish government’s Ministry of Culture recognising people who have had notable achievements in the field of artistic and cultural creation, the development of art and culture, and the conservation of artistic heritage.

Alía has been developing several activities to promote craftsmanship. He’s a founding member of the Contemporary Association of Arts and Trades (Asociación Contemporánea de Artes y Oficios), a collaborating entity of the Ministry of Culture, which is dedicated to locating Spanish master craftsmanship in combination with excellence. He’s also an ambassador of the Michelangelo Foundation in Spain that, based in Geneva, aims to protect European master craftsmanship.

Estudio Caramba develops its activity throughout the world with renowned works and projects in the hotel industry, retail, hospitality and private homes. Its more notable projects include the design of numerous hotels, including some in the prestigious Room Mate chain, among others.

He combines his professional activity with teaching. He’s a master’s degree professor at the School of Architecture at the Technical University of Madrid and professor at the European Institute of Design. His work has won numerous awards, such as the National Architecture Award for the City of Madrid, the Environmental Award in the D & AD Yellow Pencil Global Awards 2007, the Interior Architecture Award 2008 from the Grupo Vía, the AD (Architectural Digest) Award for Best Interior Designer 2009 and the Extraordinary Casa Decor 2019 Award for Professional Career.

Susana Babiloni is an architect and president of the Regional College of Architects for Castellón. She graduated in 2011 from the Technical University of Valencia and gained a master’s degree in Marketing and Market Research (2014) from Jaume I University and Graphic Advertising (2016) from the EASD Castelló.

Babiloni works as an architect in her own studio. She is also a member of the drafting team behind the Urban Regeneration and Renovation Area document used to prepare Castellón’s land-use planning and she advises different local governments on town planning matters and assessments.

She twins her profession with teaching; she teaches technical courses at universities and professional colleges on property valuations and georeferencing applied to town planning and construction.
